General information about North Cyprus 04/07/2019




Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea after the islands of Sicilia and Sardinia. The North of the island belongs to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and has a territory of 3355 sq. km.

 

The physical setting for life on the island is dominated by the mountain masses and golden coast lines, making the island very rich for flora and fauna. 

The Population of the North part of Cyprus according to 2008 data, are 260 thousand local residents, but with emigrants from other countries who are living on Northern Cyprus as well, number of inhabitants in 2008 has exceeded to the mark of 450 thousand persons. 

The main capital city of North Cyprus is Lefkosa (the old French name - Nicosia is still used by the people today). The other biggest cities of Northern part of Cyprus are Gazi Magusa (Famagusta), Girne (Kyrenia), Guzelyurt and Lefke . 

Turkish Cypriots are the main native population in North Cyprus. The main characteristic of the Turkish Cypriot are the hospitality and friendliness to every visitor of their country. 90 percent of the populations are Muslims, but most of the Turkish Cypriot Muslims do not follow strict religious rules, this is because of the history in the island. We can say that the Turkish Cypriots mostly look like Europeans rather than Asian people. The other 10 percent of the population belong to various Christian religions.

The main language in the country is Turkish, but the English language is widely used. In many hotels and restaurants, German and French languages are also used.

The local currency is Turkish Lira (TL), although Euro and Pound is widely accepted in most places.
