Public transport and driving in North Cyprus 04/07/2019

In Cyprus the driving is on the left.

The roads signs and rules are international in North Cyprus as everywhere all around the World. If you follow all the rules on the road and give way to everyone who comes from the right side you will adapt to the driving on the left in a short period of time. For example, the differences on driving on the left from the driving on right side occur when the car comes to a roundabout, because in North Cyprus the first road is for those who start moving on the roundabout if the other signs is not on the road (it is a rule - to give way to the car from the right).

The speed in urban areas does not exceed 60 kilometers per hour and on the highway not more than 100 kilometers per hour. In cities and on highways there are cameras everywhere which automatically will measure the car high speed. The penalty for the high exceeded speed will be taken from the tourists when they leave the country.

To stop near the army areas are forbidden. The red rectangular sign with a figure of a solder is a sign of the military area.

The conditions of the roads between main towns and villages are good in all destinations along North Cyprus, but there are some sections of the roads which are still under constructions.

The public transport exists in North Cyprus, but the working hours begin at 8.00 and ends at 17.00. Mostly the mini buses are for the use by local people and not for those who likes to discover new places from morning until late night. For those who wish to bring their own car to the Island can do so, but for the period of not more than 3 month. Driving in your own car is the best way to travel to historical places in Cyprus.

There are a lot of offices where you can rent a car at any time and for any period. If you rent a car, take into account the fact that there is just enough petrol to get to the nearest petrol station. The cost of the rent depends on the season and the model of rented car. The prices in summer are a minimum of 25 EURO per day and in the winter time a maximum of 19 EURO per day.

In North Cyprus it is also possible to rent a motorbike and bicycle. The rental offices for this type of transport are in Kyrenia and Famagusta. But they can require a small deposit from you, which is refundable upon a successful end of the renting period.

The taxi drivers in North Cyprus usually only use cars of the model Mercedes. In order to be recognized by others cars all taxis on the roof use the yellow sign “Taxi”. Taxi can be taken from parking areas or order by telephone. To find help to call and book the taxi you can ask any hotel, shop or restaurant in any city of North Cyprus. All the local Turkish-Cypriots are very friendly and are always ready to help anyone who asks. It is easy to find the parking areas of taxi in any towns of North Cyprus as well. Their main location is:
in Kyrenia (Girne) - near all hotels, central square of the city (near hotel Colony) and in the harbor,
